Antidepressants
Drugs used to treat mental illnesses such as major depressive disorder(MDD), generalized anxiety disorder(GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, Obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD), premenstrual dysphoric disorder, chronic and neuropathic pain, some cases of bipolar, and some eating disorders. Antidepressants usually take between 4-6 weeks to work. See the different types of anti-depressants and how they work.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)
The most commonly prescribed antidepressants, they work primarily by increasing levels of serotonin in the brain.
Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs)
These affect both serotonin and norepinephrine levels.
Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs):
Older antidepressants that also increase serotonin and norepinephrine, usually with more side effects, so they're less commonly prescribed.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
MAOIs inhibit the activity of either one, or both monoamine oxidase enzymes, but are less commonly used due to dietary/drug interaction restrictions and potential side effects.
Norepinephrine-Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors (NDRIs)
These antidepressants increase amounts of dopamine and norepinephrine.
Tetracyclic Antidepressants
Work on norepinephrine and serotonin
